Want a Career That Works for You? 3 Steps to Becoming a Virtual Assistant
Mar 14, 2025Did you know that you can become a virtual assistant with no prior experience needed? I can hear you screaming at me already to show you how, keep reading!
Becoming a virtual assistant allows you to craft a career that aligns to your unique needs. You have the flexibility to set your own schedule, work from home in the time windows that suit you, work around your various commitments and feel empowered in the work you’re choosing for yourself.
Sounds like a dream right? It is.
Becoming a virtual assistant has been one of the most rewarding career pathways I’ve chosen for myself. I’ve been able to contribute to a wild amount of experiences I never considered I’d be doing, including hosting conferences, organising and attending events, attending fashion weeks in both Sydney and Melbourne, watching a podcast come to life, contributing to marine conversation efforts and so much more.
I could not put into words how rewarding my career as a virtual assistant has been. Now, I’m empowering you to dive into this world and see what opportunities it delivers you!
Step One - Identify your skills and passion
What skills do you already have that can translate into a virtual assistant role? You’d be surprised to know that a lot of skills people possess from everyday living can apply to a VA!
Are you creatively inclined? Do you enjoy creating TikToks, or customising your Instagram feed? Social media management takes these skills and applies them to rewarding work building and supporting a brand’s marketing efforts.
Are you detail oriented and love to be organised? If you’re a Type A travel planner with an itinerary and all the details, or if you manage your household or have previously managed teams in other industries then project management is a VA role that takes those organisational skills to the next level.
Step Two - Choosing your niche
One of the biggest mistakes new virtual assistants make is trying to do everything for everyone. While being adaptable is great, defining a niche helps you stand out, build confidence, and attract the right clients.
A niche is simply a specialised area of expertise, which could be the services you offer or the industries you work with. This can cover anything from social media management for small businesses to administrative support for disability advocates.
Choosing a niche allows you to:
✅ Build confidence in your skills and streamline your services.
✅ Price your offerings more accurately based on experience.
✅ Market yourself effectively to the clients who need exactly what you do best.
When I started as a VA, I took on any task that came my way — until I realised what I loved (business operations, social media) and what I dreaded (spreadsheets, data entry). By niching down, I attracted clients who valued my expertise and felt more aligned in my work.

Step Three - Building a simple work-from-home setup
One of the biggest perks of being a virtual assistant is the ability to customise your workspace to fit your unique needs. However, working from home can also blur the lines between work and personal time, making it important to establish boundaries.
Setting up a dedicated workspace — whether it’s a full office, a quiet nook, or even a rolling desk by your bed — can help you stay motivated and maintain separation between work and rest. While the occasional laptop-in-bed work session is a nice perk, having a designated space signals when it’s time to focus and when it’s time to switch off.
And don’t be alarmed, you don’t need to drop thousands of dollars to set yourself up for this work. The key thing you need is a laptop or a desktop computer (whichever your preference is). Outside of that, you could also invest in a webcam and a headset for meetings.
